Lunar New Year concept for Crown Casino in Melbourne Year of the Goat, 2015
Commissioned in 2014 by Creative Production Services (CPS) for Crown Towers
This large-scale diorama is based on motifs and designs from Chinese Paper Cutting to decorate houses during festive periods. The simple folk art of cut paper is transformed into a larger-than-life installation to celebrate the Lunar Year of the Goat. Goat is a symbol of peace, harmony, co-existence, tolerance and tranquillity.
The Lunar New Year is traditionally a time for family to come together and celebrate, the use of a goat reflects this as it is a herd animal and is traditionally seen as family orientated, peaceful and loyal.
A majestic male goat replete with horns stands upon an outcrop looking out and protecting his family. The Mother Goat and baby enjoy the peace of the valley below. On the opposite side, two younger kids groom and try to reach sweet peaches from an overhanging branch. The scene is filled with emblems of wealth, long life and prosperity such as bamboo, pine trees, wheat, blossoms and spring floral motifs.
